Cooking with Mommy or Mimi!

My 4 year old daughter gets to spend a lot of time with her "Mimi" (a.k.a. - a way to say "Grandma" that doesn't sound so old according to my mom!). One of her favorite things to do with Mimi is to help her cook (treats of course!) On our Mommy and Me Days we also like to cook.

Cooking together is a fun bonding experience that also teaches your children positive habits.

Following Directions: Kids learn the importance of following directions by using a recipe. It can also teach them what happens when you mess the recipe up and it tastes bad!

Using Creativity: Cooking can help kids learn to be creative. Especially if they are making cookies or using icing to decorate. Its good to let your kids be creative. Don't worry about the mess they will make or the icing they get on their clothes. They are kids... let them be creative and make a mess! Some of the best geniuses in the world were the messiest! They can always clean up later. (They can always wear an old t-shirt of yours that you don't mind getting dirty or an apron!)

Cleaning Up: After you cook, make sure you and your kids clean up the mess together. It teaches them to clean up after themselves and helps build a "responsible" character in them. Cleaning can be fun if everyone joins in to help!

Self-Esteem: Your kids will take pride in something they've made, and they should! They should feel proud that they made those brownies or helped decorate that cake. It can really help build up their self esteem and feel accomplished!

Have Fun: Most importantly, cooking is a great way to have fun as a family! And enjoying your Lemon Pie or Chocolate Chip Cookies is definitely fun!

Here is an easy recipe for Lemon Ice-Box Pie that has been in my family for years. My daughter made this recently with her "Mimi" and had a blast!

Lemon Ice Box Pie:
  1. Beat together: 1 can Eagle Brand Milk and the juice of three (3) lemons.

  2. Pour into a pie crust made by just crushing graham crackers or vanilla wafers. (You can use a pre-made graham craker crust if you want super-easy)

  3. Top with whipped cream (or Cool Whip if you want super easy).

  4. To make it more attractive, arrange vanilla wafers all around the pie.

  1. The pie looks absolutely delicious, and your daughter looks like she's having a ball! You're so right that cooking with children really is quality time spent together.

It's also a fun way to learn. If they measure the ingredients and read the recipe, they're developing math and reading skills without even realizing it!

You sound like a great mom. I'm so glad to have found your blog, and I can't wait to see your book. Congratulations!
