Finding Beauty in Nature!

As we get older the hustle and bustle of life sometimes makes us forget to appreciate the little things. There is so much we can learn from our children when we take a day to spend time with them. One of my 4 year old daughter's favorite Mommy and Me Days is when we go bird watching. While this may be easier to do from the sunny shores here in Florida, there are still plenty of other things to discover in nature no matter where you live.

On our bird watching adventures we take binoculars and head out to the causeway and just sit on a bench and talk about the birds, the ocean, and the boats going by. If we are lucky we can sometimes catch a family of dolphins swimming around. But its amazing the little things my daughter will point out. For instance, she will notice the tiniest flower sprouting out of the ground, or a tiny snail sitting on the grass after the morning dew settles. She is totally amazed by it too. She wants to just sit and observe it and then think about what the snail might do that day and if they have a family and if they go to school and on and on. The world is a beautiful and amazing place and we seldom stop to look around and notice the beauty in the little things.

Take your kids for a nature walk. Even if you only walk around your back yard, you will be amazed at what your kids will find. It gets you and your kids active both physically and mentally.

Create a nature journal! On your nature hikes around the yard with your kids, take pictures of the things they encounter: trees, birds, butterflies, leaves, snails, a piece of tree bark, flowers, everything! They will love putting together this nature journal with you and it will help them create a memory of your fun time together.
